Paint with Earth Workshops

Elizabeth presents workshops that provide instruction and inspiration surrounding the foraging of pigment in nature (soil, rocks, and plants) and using them to create your own paint.

Close your eyes and think of a dance where you and the earth can touch at one another’s edges, mixing soil and sweat to fuse something into existence: color!

—Elizabeth Cockey

Workshop Phase 1: Foraging in Nature

You will accompany Elizabeth into fields and streams, climb up hills or down valleys to scrape plugs of earth from the riverbanks and farm fields. Shale and a variety of clays may be found and brought back to be sorted, dried, and categorized for later.

Native plants can also be harvested for drying. Depending on the time of year, you may find a variety of plants that can be used for natural dyeing but also for making pigments.

Workshop Phase 2: Making Paint and Painting

You will learn how to grind the pigments into powder for mixing. This is the most exciting part—making paint, like an alchemist!

You will also have an opportunity to practice watercolor painting and bring a small palette home, along with a greeting card of your own art!
